Paul Bernardo

Paul Bernardo and Karla Homolka were viewed as Ken and Barbie to the world, but this was just the appearance on the outside. Once their horrible secret was revealed, Ken and Barbie quickly vanished to a thing of the past. The pair claimed the life of three innocent people and they became known as Canada’s most reviled criminals.

The two met in Scarborough Ontario in 1987 where Paul was secretly the Scarborough rapist. But the couple’s sexual perversion began when they began preforming fantasies on Karla’s fifteen year old sister Tammy. On December 23, 1990, The two drugged her and Karla video taped while Paul raped the girl. Tragically, Tammy choked on her own vomit and died. Once the autopsy was released, the murder was ruled accidental because there was nothing suspicious.

After this close call. Bernardo continued out with his heinous plans. First, Leslie Mahaffy, a fourteen year old was kidnaped during a late-night chance encounter with Bernardo during June of 1991. She was raped and beaten for over 24 hours before being strangled with an electrical cord, dismembered, and encased in blocks of cement. Once all this was done, she was dropped into a lake near st. Catharines and was found on June 29 1991 by

In May, 1995, the trial was off and ready to go. In the court room of Patrick LeSage, Bernardo faced two counts of first-degree murder, two counts of aggravated sexual assault, two counts of forcible confinement, two counts of kidnaping, and one count of performing an indignity on a human body.

nearby fishermen. Coincidentally, this was the same day as Paul and Karla’s wedding.

It was on February 17 1993, almost a year after the last rape/murder, police arrested Paul in his St. Catharines home. The next day, with the help of DNA tests, police charged Bernardo with multiple counts of sexual assaults in many attacks dating back to 1983 which was when the Scarborough rapes took place. Three months later, on May 17, Homolka is two counts of manslaughter in the French and Mahaffy killings. Surprisingly she is freed on bail and Bernardo receives the charges of the murders.

Although Karla played an important role in these crimes, her sentence was a lot less harsh than Bernardo. Many people were outraged by this because she had made a plea bargain deal. George Walker and Murray Segal, plea bargain specialists for the attorney general, discussed a deal for Karla. She would get twelve years in prison for each of the two victims, but the sentences would be served at the same time. She would be eligible for parole in a little over three years with good behavior. The government even agreed to contact the parole board on Karla's behalf, pointing out to them the importance of her testimony against Paul. Segal would
