Today’s world contains countries with myriad forms of governments and economies. Some countries are very similar while others are drastically different. In comparing the United States to Italy and Saudi Arabia, one can view the similarities and the definite unique qualities of each country. The United States is the country of opportunity. The US government is a constitution-based federal republic with a strong democratic tradition. The constitution is the basis of the American government and is the document that states the individual’s rights. A federal system is held in the US, which means dual power is split between the central and state government. President George W. Bush heads the United States government in the executive branch. The president is the chief of state who signs laws into effectiveness. The president’s running mate, is Vice President Richard Cheney. The vice president’s only duty, according to the constitution, is to preside over the deliberations of the Senate. Also within the executive branch is the cabinet. The third branch of the US government is the judicial branch, which is called the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court consists of nine justices that are appointed for life by the president and approved by the Senate. The Supreme Court interprets the laws that have been put into effect and is the highest court of America. If previous federal of local courts have disagreed on a decision, the case can be taken to the Supreme Court. The Saudi Arabian judiciary branch is the Supreme Court of Justice. The court supervises operations of lower courts, review legal questions, and express legal opinion. The government allows for no other political parties. The economy of Saudi Arabia is centers around oil. The government has strong controls over the major economic activities. Saudi Arabia has the largest petroleum reserves in the world. The government uses the money from oil for transportation, housing, health, education, and defense of its citizens. The presence of about four million workers in Saudi Arabia plays an important role in the economy. The government is supporting private sector growth to lessen the kingdom’s dependence on oil and increase employment opportunities for the swelling Saudi population. The government of the United States is a balance of powers. Checks and balances ensure that no one branch of government gains more power over the others. The balance of powers is also applied between the central and state governments, known as federalism. Besides a vast system of government, the United States also have an enormous economy. The US has the largest and most technologically powerful economy in the world. The economy is a market-oriented, where private individuals and business firms make most of the decisions. A mixed economy can best describe the United States. The government plays an important role along with private enterprises. America, the land of opportunity, has a government that works for the US but it is not the only kind of government that does work. The third branch of the Italian government is the judicial branch. The Constitutional Court makes up this branch with fifteen judges. One-third are appointed by the president, one-third are elected by the ordinary and the administrative Supreme Courts, and one-third are elected by Parliament. Another part of the judicial branch is the Supreme Court of Cassation, which is the highest court of appeals in all cases, except those concerning the constitution.
