Ringer

Imagine you have just finished competing in a horserace when you just found out that the person that beat you by a hairline entered fraudulently, what would you call him? What would you call a person that resembles quite like you? It might be possible that you would want to call the person in that horserace a big jerk or maybe call the person that looks like you your twin. However, for these two definitions there is a word for both, Ringer. This word has a long history and dates back very far. Although it has a long history, the true meaning of the word does not differ that much of how it is used today.

The origin of the word dates back from 1425 when it was used for a person who rang a bell. Although it was used in that context so far back it has not changed at all since today. However, it was not always spelled as it is today. It was spelled, R-y-n-g-e-r as used in this example; “The seker (seeker) shall fynde (find), and the rynger (ringer) or knokker (knocker) shall enter.” This definition of ringer alone was used up to 1875 until a mechanical device was invented for ringing a bell which then defined the device as a ringer. An example used in this context in 1890, “A novel feature of this bell is that the

Although the word has its many definitions it has not seemed to change the way it is used today. We can identify the definition of the word that was used in the 1400’s as it is used today. When I hear or think of this word I can relate to positive and negative connotations. When I think positively, I think of myself as a ringer. I am at a fancy hotel covered with bright lights, as I walk up to the front desk I don’t see anybody, so I ring a bell that is on the concierge counter. I ring it once to have two people rush up to me, one to check me in, and the other to take my bags immediately. It makes me feel important when I have people waiting for me at a ring of a bell. When I think of a negative connotation, I think of a true story about a Cuban boy. A Cuban boy was recruited to America to play in the Junior Major Leagues. The appropriate age for this league was 12 years. This league is equivalent to adult major leagues but is focused on young kids. The Cuban boy fraudulently faked his birth certificate that stated he was 12 years old, which in fact he was 16 years old. The boy’s team made it to the Junior World Series and was famous for his outstanding pitches. He was an idol and a hero to all the junior baseball players. Howe
