In the book The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne he uses guild to lead the story, and intrigue the reader. If you were to dissect Nathaniel Hawthorne’s book The Scarlet Letter you would be overwhelmed with examples and situations dealing with guilt.

In The Scarlet Letter, Hester is delt with a punishment of being forced to wear an “A” across her chest. The letter across her chest was a sign in puritan society to show the public that she had committed a sin explained in the book The Scarlet Letter “Thus she will be a living sermon against sin”. The “A” on her chest made Hester a real living sermon, the “A” was known throughout the puritan society. The letter’s intended effect was to leave the sinner with a mind full of guilt thus changing Hester’s life forever, the reader is briefed on what had happened to Hester in Nathaniel’s book “Man had marked this women’s sin by a scarlet letter, which had such potent and disastourus efficacy that no human sympathy could reach h


Roger Chillingsworth a twisted and deformed, physically is Hester’s husband from England, the reader is told that Chillingsworth was not the best husband often leaving Hester to herself. Chillingsworth came to the puritan society as what Hawthorne calls a “leech” or in modern terms a doctor. As the book progresses Chillingsworth becomes to evil and guilt he says himself he is no longer able to view himself “…A mortal man, with once a human heart, has become a fiend for his especial torment!
