Henry's Abuse of God

The use of the word God or religious names are used many times in the play Henry V. It is King Henry that seen using God’s name in many of his speeches and personal commentaries. Yet there is quite a big contradiction that is made when Henry tries to use God as the underlying reason to go to war and in reality it is Henry’s personal reasons that he declares to take up arms. In England, there was an obvious connection between the King and God, so Henry was allowed to use God to maintain legitimacy. To make this concept even more important, especially in his case, was the situation of how his father became King, but by using God as his right hand man Henry is able to show more credibility for why he should be king. In order to strengthen his validity for being king, Henry poses as a religious king and through his words conveys that God is with him fighting for England, but the truth is he exploits the use of God for his own personal desires.

From the very start of the play Henry tries to use religion as a justification for going to war. With the help from the Archbishop, who we know also wanted war, he was cushioned with the backing of the church which enabled him to put the illusion

Does anyone know who St. Crispen is or what his significance was in the Christian faith? Well it is quite obvious that this saint had no real connection to the war, but since it was St. Crispen’s Day, Henry expertly used it as motivating propaganda. The soldiers were outnumbered, sick and ready to give up when they found out the odds they were against. Henry desperately needed a way to give his men a boost in morale if he wanted to win this battle. But luck would have it because it was not any normal day, it was the day we remember a Christian saint, which makes this battle all the more honorable because of the religious significance. Although it cannot be argued that this idea was pure genius, it simply was Henry using a saint to in a way “anoint” this bloody battle. With this constructive use of religious language, Henry is able to win the determination and perseverance that is needed to win this battle.

Henry was a beautiful speaker and leader, and in some ways he acted almost priestly. Any Christian soldier would certainly have their faith renewed by his king offering up their victory with heavenly praise,

Despite Henry’s lack of authentic religious conviction, his abilities as a military king made him a successful conqueror and after he wins, Henry is quick to credit God with the victory. As soon as Henry gets word that they have won the last battle he exclaims, “Praise be God, and not our strength, for it!” (IV.7.88) This is a perfect example of Henry putting God as the forerunner for this war. He is insinuating that God has led his men, through the leadership of Henry, to this victory. It is as if Henry wants to appear as this selfless king, with nothing else in mind except the glory of God. I find this almost funny, because he makes it so obvious when he makes a statement like this. Yet he had no reason to worry because Henry has charismatically wooed his army in such a way that they will
