Leukoaraiosis
Research Proposal Title: Leukoaraiosis and intracerebral hemorrhage Leukoaraiosis, an abnormal appearance on a brain scan, is a common finding in patients with ischaemic or haemorrhagic stroke, but its significance is unclear. Treatments such as thrombolysis and anticoagulation are recommended for certain patients with ischaemic stroke, but carry a risk of intracerebral haemorrhage. Knowing whether leukoaraiosis is an independent risk factor for intracerebral haemorrhage should help the clinician in deciding to treat with thrombolysis or anticoagulants. Does the presence of Leukoaraiosis on the brain scan predict a higher risk of intracerebral hemorrhage? 1. To determine the relationship between the presence and extent of leukoareiosis and the nature of the intracerebral hemorrhage. 2. To correlate the presence and extent of leukoaraiosis with traditional vascular risk factors (such as age, hypertension, diabetes, atrial fibrillation) 3. To perform a multivariate analysis to determine if the presence of leukoaraiosis independently predicts a higher risk of intracerebral hemorrhage.
