“And it was a matter for joy to Wang Lung that this slave gave birth to a girl, for if it had been a boy she would have been proud and have claimed a place in the family.” (Buck, p. 184) This quote showed the harsh discrimination that took place against women. According to Confucius a woman’s job was only to do the housework and to have children. During traditional China, society forced women into the practice of binding feet. This was an inhumane, unjust act but according to society at that time if the women did not have their feet bound, they would be considered ugly and barbaric. Most women were only merchandise or objects that could be sold our bought depending on the decision of their father or even husband. In traditional China before the revolution the attitude toward women reflected its traditions, religion, and society. “As soon as the daughters grew old enough to be married off to her husband’s family, she creates an economical loss to her family.” (Chinese Women’s Status in Traditional China, P. 1) Women were thought of as lower class just for being women. They were extremely discriminated against. They could be bought as if they were slaves, and most people sold them for money! “But there were som
There was strong discrimination against women during the time of traditional China. Society had many views on women. They treated women like merchandise, they were meant to only bear children and do housework, and they were thought of as useless. One way in which society bounded women was through foot binding. A disgusting act that was a custom for many years. The base of discrimination against women could have been Confucianism, which clearly stated that women were lower class and also clearly stated their jobs in life. While most discrimination against women is abolished now it should never be forgotten the painful, inhumane and hard lives that women during traditional China had to live through. One of the most inhumane, unjust, gruesome things that women had to do, was foot binding. This disgusting and painful process would scar women for life. The process of foot binding started at about the age of 5-6 and attempted to shorten the length of their feet. “Mothers bound the feet of their daughters at around 5 years of age and gradually decreased the size of the child’s foot over a period of months. The feet were called lotus of gold if they were 3 inches (about 7.5 centimeters) long, silver if they were 4 inches (about 10 centimeters) long or iron if they were more than 4 inches long.” (Footbinding, P. 2) If a woman did not have her feet bound they would be considered ugly and barbaric, Just like Wang Lung could not love O-lan in The Good Earth. “And my mother said I was not to weep aloud because you are too kind and weak for pain and you might say to leave me as I am, and than my husband would not love me even as you do not love her” (Buck, p. 180). Women without bound feet would not
