PLO
The conflict currently occurring in the Middle East between the Arabs and Jews has been going on for more than half century. The conflict began early in the 20th century when Jews began to flood Palestine creating controversy with the already occupying Arab population. In order to protect the Arabs of Palestine the PLO was created in 1964 to secure an independent state of Palestine. The following pages of this document will argue that the PLO is unarguably the sole, legitimate voice of the Palestinian people. This story begins in the early years of the 20th century when Jewish refugees immigrated to Palestine eventually founding the state known as Israel. This area of Palestine was under British control for nearly thirty years after the fall of the Ottoman Empire in the year 1918. As conflict continued to increase the United Nations proposed a solution in `947 separating Palestine into two distinct areas for Jews and Arabs This United Nation proposal never took place and on May 14, 1948 British troops began to leave the area known as Palestine. The US Government continues to monitor closely PLO compliance with its commitment to abandon terrorism and violence. At first the PLO was an umbrella for six Palestinian organizations that included constituent groups and individuals holding different views on terrorism. The PLO consists of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP), the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine (DFLP), Al Saiqi, and The Arab Liberation Front. In 1968 the PLO began a more military approach when Yasir Arafat, the leader of al-Fatah, was elected as chairman. Al-Fatah was established by a group of young Gazans in the year 1956. Yassir Arafat began as a young terrorist in this group and eventually became its leader in 1968. Through the use of armed forces the PLO was dedicated to the di
