A Separate Peace, a novel by John Knowles, takes place on the grounds of an exclusive, all male, New England high school during World War II. At the beginning of the novel, all of the boys were united by the common thread of being Devon School students. As the tranquility of the summer session ends, the boys of Devon find themselves facing difficult, life-altering situations. Through the personal crisis and tragedy, each boy at Devon School struggles to fine his own “separate peace.”Leper was the outcast at Devon, which did not allow him to find his ownseparate peace. For example, Leper joined recreational clubs to aid him in finding peace, but was not successful. He played Blitzball, which was an invention of Finny. It had no rules and every man was for himself; Leper was still ignored. The Super Suicide Society of the Summer Session was another way Leper tried to stay peaceful with himself, but he never did jump out of the tree the way the other boys did. This too made him an outcast. Also, Leper tried to connect with nature for peace. He went “touring” as he liked to call it. He would ski while enjoying the winter landscape. Leper searched for birds, beaver dams, and other nature relat
Gene struggles through his years at Devon School to find his separate peace, but does not reach peace within himself until he grows older. For instance, Gene was never as good at athletics like Finny, so he tried to find peace through academics. Gene studied all the time in order to pass tests with A’s. Finny could care less about school; he wasn’t too bright. He always put unserious, fun and games first. The trip Finny and Gene took to the beach made Gene realize that Finny only wants to have fun and that he should keep up with his studies. Secondly, Gene grows very jealous of Finny so he thinks that handicapping him will help him become more superior. When jumping out of the tree for the Super Suicide Society of the Summer Session, Gene jounces the tree branch and causes Finny to fall. Finny no longer can play sports because his leg was shattered. Gene gets satisfaction out of this because now Finny has nothing against him as he had before, but this brings Gene no peace; he ends up regretting it because Finny was his best friend. Finally, after the trial and error of finding peace, Gene comes to closure with himself at the end when he is forgiven by Finny. Before Finny dies, he tells Gene, “I believe you. It’s okay because I understand and I believe you. You’ve already shown me and I believe you.”(183) This gives Gene his own personal freedom from strife because he couldn’t forgive himself for hurt
