sympathy for Oedipus
Oedipus is the central figure and tragic hero of Sophocles’ play. Though he is initially the majestic king of Thebes, he soon becomes a dejected man, humbled by his horrible fate. As the oracle predicts, Oedipus kills his father unknowing of his identity, and marries his mother. We feel sympathy for Oedipus when Oedipus is on the point of discovery. He knows deep down the truth. He is waiting for confirmation. Everything moves from good intentions. If only the shepherd had disposed of the infant. Even before Oedipus was conceived he was doomed. It was his entire tragic fate. Oedipus is doomed as he always was.
