Paolo Uccello Essay
Paolo Uccello, whose real name was Paolo di Dono, lived from 1397 to 1475. He was the son of Dono di Paolo, a surgeon and a barber, and Antonia di Giovanni del Beccuto. He was a painter and a mosaicist in the early Renaissance. Uccello was known to have a very unique style. He incorporated sometimes very complicated perspective into his paintings. Paolo also loved geometry, which is evident in many of his works. His works had similarities to the Cubist and Surrealist schools of this era. In 1407, Paolo was already working with the young Donatello as an apprentice in Ghiberti's workshop on the finishing touches of the first of the Baptistery doors. He was nicknamed Uccello, which means bird, because he loved painting birds and other animals. It is also a possibility that he was one of Gherardo Starnina's students, a Florentine, who worked in Spain between the 14th and 15th centuries and is believed to have been one of the importers of the Gothic style to Florence. Paolo’s formation as an artist took place during the first two decades of the fifteenth century when the style and culture were being subjected to much experimentation. Paolo Uccello became a member of the Company of Painters of S
t. Luke in 1424. He left Florence in 1425 to go to Venice to create some mosaics at St. Mark's, which are lost today. The only piece that remains of this early period for Uccello is his Annunciation from 1425, which is known for containing some very complicated perspective, in the Carnesecchi Chapel in Santa Maria Maggiore. He was gone for five years and was completely uninformed about what had been happening in Florence. Masaccio's revolution in the Carmine and Brunelleschi's project for the Cupola of Santa Maria del Fiore were some of the works that he did not even know of. When he came home to Florence in 1431, he was artistically behind the times in regards to the new artistic styles.
