Lester’s new view on life as well as his new way of life all happened because of Angela. Angela was a large part of Lester’s fantasy life that he had been living, and now she was the one that woke him up from his fantasy. Lester’s change in behavior because of Angela strongly affected the outcome of the movie. It was this relationship that caused Caroline to have her affair with Buddy. Also, the relationship between Lester and Angela caused Lester to change his life. By changing his life, he developed a relationship with Ricky as well as a new addiction to marijuana. This relationship with Ricky led to the misunderstanding with Ricky’s father that led to the Colonel shooting Lester at the end of the movie. That same misunderstanding also led to Ricky and his father getting into an argument, and the Colonel kicking Ricky out of the house. Not only did Lester ruin his own family by having the relationship with Angela, but he ruined Ricky’s family as well.

By Angela’s actions and Lester’s distance from his wife, Lester actually becomes more in touch with reality. He realizes that he no longer enjoys his job, and that he is unhappy with the way he is leading his life. Lester quits his job and takes a new job at a fast-food restaurant. After realizing that he was not happy with his life, Lester continues to make dramatic changes to his life. When he first meets Ricky next door, he starts smoking marijuana again for the first time in many years. He then trades in his car on an old Pontiac Trans Am that he had always wished to have. All of these new actions however, drive Caroline even farther away from him.

onversation takes place, and when Caroline tries to start up a conversation, neither Lester nor Jane take any interest. After Jane goes to the kitchen, Lester makes the comment to his wife about Jane, “you treat her like an employee.” Lester was prompted to say this after Caroline expects Jane to clean up the table as if it were her job. Caroline ignores Lester’s remarks and does not care what his opinion is. Tension in between Caroline and Lester is obvious at this point in the movie.
