Thinking as defined in the chapter one hand titled "Thinking," states that "successful thinking enables us to solve problems we are continually confronted with, to make intelligent decisions, and to achieve the goals that give our lives purpose and fulfillment." It also goes on to point out that thinking is "an activity that is crucial to living a meaningful life. Understanding this fact will have a great impact on my career. .
One of the main concepts of thinking is setting goals and working towards those goals. Goals play an important role in your life; as they can serve as motivational tools, giving your life some form of direction. Without goals a person's life would be like a ship set adrift with only the oceans currents to guide it. Before entering college, I was one of those drifting ships. To be honest, I didn't even realize this fact until exposed to some of the concepts in this class. To me, I was doing pretty well for someone with a G.E.D; I often reminded myself how lucky I was to be earning the kind of money I was. .
Fortunately as I began to understand what it meant to be a critical thinker, I realized I was indeed lucky. Not in the sense of having the job; but keeping it. I saw that I had the skills to do the job; however if the time came where I was ever laid off or fired the probability of me finding another job like that was remote. This realization was sort of an awakening for me. It became clear that for me to make something of myself and become a better person, I had to make better decisions and change my perception of my life.
Part of critical thinking is making the right decisions. Only we the right decisions are made can the goals you set can be achieve. All too often we make hasty decisions without thinking them through and end up regretting them. The same holds true when it comes to choosing a career. Sometimes we choose a career because of the money or other reasons without considering if we like that job or not.
