Political parties are designed to play a crucial part in the democratic process. Their functions include formulating political agendas, conducting election campaigns, and providing the means by which people can have a voice in a government. The first political parties were the Federalists and the Republicans. The Federalists and Republicans helped to shape the political system during the 1790's by their differences in how they ran the governmental system. Their differences included their attitude toward government, views on the constitution, and the foreign policy perspective.

The Federalists consisted of bankers, merchants, and manufactures from New England. They believed in a centralized government. They did not believe that the common people were able to govern themselves. Also they believed that government should be far removed form the people, they favored a standing army, and they pushed for strong courts to maintain order ands insure justice.

The Republicans believed in a minium of a government. They wanted to safeguard the rights of people and felt they could govern themselves. Favoring congress, local government over national government, freedom of speech and press, and the reducing the number of federal officeholde


The events in the election of 1800, the Iran Revolution, and the election in 1980 are similar in different ways. All three events were about the transfer of power in countries that had used the same ways for a long time. In the election of 1800 the first two political parties battled it out until in the end it was the Republicans that won. Here was two different political parties with different views and the one with the clearer view on what the people wanted came through In Iran it was the transition of powers between two people who were greatly different. They each had their own views how the country needed to be ran.. Finally in the election of 1980 brought power back to the republicans after it being taken from them twenty five years earlier. Like the election in 1800 both political parties had different views about the country and disagreed with each other about political issues.

Foreign and domestic crises gave rise to the political parties, they formalized their organizations and mobilized support among voters. The republicans came together to oppose the whiskey tax, Jay’s Treaty, and the Alien and Sedition Acts. They represented the biggest part of the new country, farmers and southerners and were united by antifederalists.
