Reality is perception, but everyone has a different view of the world around them. Who’s to say that what they are seeing, touching, hearing, and tasting is what everyone else is sensing or what they should be sensing. Not only will everyone have a different take on reality but no one will ever truly grasp the truth because individual perspectives are limited by range of vision and perception. The Matrix by the Wachowski Brothers shows how individual people are limited in their ability to see reality by the systems they are a part of.
The Wachowski brothers used many methods to show that reality is limited by perception throughout the entire movie. They blend dream sequences together with awakenings to show that no one can really differentiate between reality and fantasy. For instance Neo is often made to believe that things are figments of his imagination by the matrix. They use his limited perceptions to make him think that he is only dreaming whenever they can not get him to help them and they need him dismiss what happened. This shows the audience that it can be impossible to separate reality from fiction if you are amerced in a system that limits your perception. The Wachowski brothers often use mirror
Once the Neo comprehends that the matrix is a made up world he can free his mind of the system of belief that has trapped him and limited him to normalcy. In doing so he can see around all the “mirrors” and instead of seeing only a portion of reality he see the whole. He understands that only his mind is in the matrix not his body and a free mind is capable of anything. He is able to surpass not only the basic limits of the made up reality but he is able to manipulate the reality to match his perception. He understands that as Morpheus put it his strength and speed have nothing to do with his body within the matrix it is all based on the power of one’s mind. Once he is able to see beyond his own body he can move faster and be stronger than he previously was. This is shown as a progression throughout the movie; Neo slowly gains more and more confidence in his ability to be a strong and as fast as he wants to be. It is shown first in the fight with Morpheus when he is driven to realize his potential to exceed his physical limitations by believing, then when he dodges countless bullets, and finally when he defeats Agent Smith in the subway tunnel and again in the hotel.
The most prominent example of this is all people that are connected to the matrix have to abide by its most basic rules. These rules are not challenged by anyone because their whole live they are told that that these rules cannot be broken. These rules are set limits that no one would ever think to oppose because they believe whole heartedly and why shouldn’t they it is what everyone else believes. Morpheus and his crew however broke free from this system of force feed beliefs and because of this they are no longer limited by the matrix’s basic rules. The most basic rule that is bent and later shattered is gravity. In the first scene of the movie Trinity is able to
