            Colin Luther Powell was born on May 5,1937 in Presbyterian Hospital. He was born in South Bronx, New York City were he grew up. Having grown up in the Bronx he was subjected to drugs, violence and gangs, but that never influenced him. His aspirations and goals stood way ahead of the "hard knock" life that he grew up in. Colin Powell's parents Muad Ariel Mckoy and Luther Powell were immigrants from Jamaica. In there home lands the Powell's were farmers. This humble and hard working life style his parents grew up in perforated Colin Powell's spirit. His parents past and history is what drove Colin Powell to work hard and strive for the best no matter what hard ships he had to endure. .
             Amazingly this admirable man didn't really stand tall when he was in elementary school. Powell was in the slower classes when he was in fourth grade and he required a lot of extra help. That extra help got him a long way and he excelled all through high school and still continued to remain humble and stay away from the street life in South Bronx, New York City. In 1954, he graduated from Morris High School in New York City. Even though he was studious and did well in school he was always in competition with his sister Marilyn Powell how at the time was the shinning star in the Powell family.
             Little did he know that he would not only be a shinning star for his family but also for the entire United States. Like every senior in High School the application process had begun. Colin Powell applied to City College of New York (CCNY) and New York City University (NYU), both colleges accepted him. Unfortunately coming from a family that a limited income he choose CCNY, because he wasn't going to be able to afford the seven hundred and fifty dollars a semester to attend NYU. Successfully, Powell graduated from CCNY in 1958, were he majored in Engineering. Along with going to college Colin managed to join the Recruit Officer Training Corps (ROTC) were he received discipline training.
