Comparing Two Short Stories

Compare the way the two short stories, The Cone (H.G Wells) and The Kissing Game (Aidan Chambers), deal with the themes of betrayal and revenge and explain how suspense is created by the authors.

‘The Cone’ is a short story written in the 19th century by H.G Wells. It is a story involving betrayal, revenge and a murder. H.G Wells used a lot of description in his story, especially when describing the iron factory. This was because of the time it was written in. People back then needed a lot of description because they would not have been to an iron factory before, and it created a good image for them. It also made things a lot more interesting to hear about something new. ‘The Cone’ is full of suspense through until the very end and always stays tense.

‘The Kissing Game’ is also a short story but it was written in the second half of the 20th century by Aidan Chambers. Like ‘The Cone’, it is a story about betrayal and revenge involving a horrific murder. Aidan Chambers does not depend on detailed description like H.G Wells; instead he is more reliant on dialogue. This is because the story was written in modern times and is set in a regular back yard, so a lot of description isn’t really needed because it is

Every time it seemed to be nearing to Raut’s demise, it was not and the story went on filled with more mystery that created questions in the readers’ minds. In ‘The Kissing Game’ the murder was not so predictable and so it was definitely a twist in the tale.

“At least they were both afraid of something.”

This shows that the boy and the girl had something in common. Just like James, Rosie had also been betrayed by the opposite sex. What had happened to her in reality was James’ fantasy so Rosie decided to get revenge over James. She asks him to meet her in the back garden and gives him deliberate instructions.

Here she is referring to Horrocks and his workers. When Horrocks discovers he has been betrayed, by walking in on Raut and his wife, he feels he cannot trust either of them ever again.
