Legalization of Marijuana

Marijuana is said to be a gateway drug and is looked down upon by society as a whole. However there are some good things which we could gain from marijuana. In colonial America, Hemp, which is a type of marijuana, was raised by both Jefferson and Washington as a big cash crop. If marijuana was to be legalized for both smoking and the use of hemp crime would be reduced, we will be able to grow hemp to make clothes and paper, and also another source of income and jobs will be available for those who need them.

An argument against the legalization of marijuana says “Drug use causes serious problems in society: accidents, lost productivity on the job, and wrecked families.” Some say that legalizing marijuana will make things worse, and others say these things are only happening because marijuana is illegal. According to NORML (National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws) the country can also benefit from a plant which is directly related to marijuana and which is also illegal. This plant is called hemp. Hemp is easily and quickly grown, and it also produces a higher yield per acre than cotton and doesn’t require as much pesticides. Hemp has a 100 day growing cycle and when it is harvested it leaves the soil rich and weed free for the next planting. Hemp is used to make clothes, paper, and many other products as well. Growing hemp opens up a whole new range of jobs for people. With this new crop there will need to be people who plant, take care of, and harvest the hemp. With the rapid ability to grow and ability to sell the government could put a tax on marijuana so that they could benefit from this drug also.
