Thailand and Japan
Asia is a large continent made up of many different countries. This project brings into focus Japan in the north-east and Thailand in the south-east. Due to many factors these countries share similar characteristics while also remaining very unique. In respect to this, their level of development and their physical and human geography will be looked at and compared.Japan is situated in the North Pacific Ocean, it’s closest neighbours are Russia in the north, north/west and North and South Korea in the west and south west. This information can be seen on Map 1. Japan’s landmass consists of over 3900 islands, of which Hokkaido in the north, Kyushu and Shikoku in the south, and the central island Honshu are the largest. Close to 80% of the population live on the main island of Honshu, which occupies 61% of Japan’s total land area. The capital of Japan is Tokyo and is found also on Honshu island. In total, most Japanese inhabitants live on the coast and other habitable land is small considering nearly three quarters of Japan is mountainous. The highest peak is Mt Fuji at 3776m, which is an extinct volcano. There are over 60 active volcanoes in Japan, and the country is prone to bad earthquakes. Despite
Thailand has a tropical climate with high temperatures and humidity. Three seasons can be distinguished. The wet season which lasts from June through to October, succeeded by a cool season November through to February and, subsequently, hot season from March through to May. Rainfall in Thailand varies according to region and increases east to west with altitude from 1,000mm in the Chao Phraya Delta to 3000mm in mountainous areas. In Bangkok January temperatures 25.6 degrees Celsius, and in July 28.3 degrees Celsius. The average annual rainfall is 1,400mm. Graphs 3 and 4 show populations pyramids for Japan and Thailand, you can see that Thailand has a pyramid shape and Japan a rocket. This means Japan’s population is consists of less older and younger people and most of the 30-39 age group. Thailand on the other hand has progressively more people in age brackets as age decreases. The under 10 years of age group has the great population percentage. Of the total land area of Thailand, 34% is arable, 4% under permanent crops, 1% meadow and pasture and 30% forest and woodland. Rice is the most important crop for Thailand and many farmers grow it. Other crops include sugar, maize, rubber, manioc, pineapples and seafood.
