In my set group in drama, we were set the task of performing a piece of drama using sections taking from the story, “The Crucible”. Recently we have also been asked to read two plays, “Antigone” and “St Joan”. All three stories were set at completely different time periods. The Crucible was set in 1660, Antigone in1942 and St Joan in 1430. This makes several comparisons between the stories easier to identify for a start. Also an obvious similarity in all three stories is that they all consist of a death at the end. However it’s my task to look more deeply into each story. To draw out some interesting similarities and differences noticeable within them and to compare what has been found.
The similarities between The Crucible and Antigone revolve roughly around death, love and law. Antigone is recognisably like Abigail because I noticed within each story they both take law into their own hands. Also in each of th
ese stories the rebelling against the law horrendously leads to death in both cases. Traumatically a similarity occurs in both; because each story contains the dealing of death of love ones. In The Crucible this includes Elizabeth and Abigail, and in Antigone this revolves around Polynices and Antigone. Betrayal takes place in each story, which results to another death, which in The Crucible contains, Elizabeth and John Proctor. And in Antigone this includes Eleocles and Polynices. One thing that was quickly noticed about both stories, was the tone in which they gave off. A lot of disagreeing, argumentative lines are included. It was noticeable both plays were written in a pleading tone.
These two stories generally have a lot more similarities than differences. The differences however seem to be more towards the end of both stories. In each case confession does not make any difference, they are still punished by getting locked a
