True Reformation

Some years ago a German scholar came under a terrible attack for describing the poor condition of the church. His article was titled ‘The Babylonian Captivity’. In it… Martin Luther pointed out that the church had fallen so far away from truth that it had spiritually become Bablylon: Apostate!

What would Luther have said if he had been born 500 years later… and he had seen our Evangelical Church today? Would he have given thanks for our reverent worship, faithfulness to the truth, separation from the world… or would he have pronounced our church Apostate? It’s an important question to ask! Yet many find the question insulting… because faithfulness involves the truth of God… doctrine.

Doctrine isn’t very popular in our churches. You can almost hear the words of II Timothy 4:3 “For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears.” This morning… I would like for us to consider the spiritual health of the evangelical church, as we look at ten symptoms of apostasy.
