Owen meany
Society is always changing, we keep moving towards a world where hard task are easier to accomplish. For instance, communication is not a problem any more; cellular phones, internet, and all the technology involved are making our lives effortless. However, they are consuming a big amount of our time. Our society is, in somehow, attracted to the unknown. As a result, we are always seeking for new entertainment. Reading a novel or riding a horse is not fun anymore. We prefer to search the web or drive a fast car. The most important thing we are leaving behind is faith. The believe of a “god”, the creator our father. The author’s main message in A Prayer for Owen Meany was that of religious faith. John Irving was trying to tell people to think, or even rethink, about their stance on faith. By forcing Johnny through various trials and tribulations he strengthened his faith through out the book. Owen Meany, throughout the book, proves that he is something beyond the ordinary, despite the fact he was extremely small. “The Shot”, or so it was called by Owen Meany, was not very prevalent in and of itself, but it symbolism all its own. To pull off “The Shot,” it required both Johnny and Owen to work t
The most powerful event that got across his message was near the end of the book. At the airport in Arizona, Owen and Johnny spotted a group of Vietnamese children being led by a nun. After somehow procuring a grenade, a madman tries to kill the children with it. Owen grabs the grenade and attempts the “shot” with Johnny; thereby killing himself, but saving the children. This occurrence is very symbolic of Jesus giving his life to save the sinful people that comprise Christianity. Perhaps the most shocking moment of the book is when it is revealed to Johnny, and the readers, that Mrs. Meany is a virgin. That means that Owen was born precisely the same way as the son of God. It is then clear why Owen has acted as he has in past sections of the book. He realizes he is but a hand of God, and one who knows what his fate will be. This inner war in Owen is a reflection of a war between two interest groups in the USA, which are the supporters of the war and those who protest the war. Those who support the war see America as a country that has a responsibility to uphold peace in the world. Even if the absence of this peace is in some distant part of the world, these war supporters feel that the sacrifice of American lives is necessary. Those that are against the war love the people that are being sent away to fight and they don't want to see them get hurt. Those that oppose the war see no need for the USA to stick their nose in other people's problems. The fact that possibly has the most influence on Owen's strive toward heroism is the fact that his family and he believe him to be of a virgin birth. This suggests that Owen sees himself as the second Christ. An important part of A Prayer for Owen Meany is set in the time period of the Vietnam War. Because Owen Meany sees himself as a second Jesus Christ, he feels obligated to go to the war and sacrifice himself for others. When Owen is playing the part of the ghost of Christmases yet to come in A Christmas Carol he swears that he sees his name and the date of his death on a tombstone. Owen later has a dream that gruesomely depicts his death. In his dream he sees himself saving many Vietnamese children, and then he dies in the arms of a nun. At this point Owen is set on the idea that his destiny is to go to Vietnam to sacrifice his own life in a war that is not his. Owen's blind courage is a parallel
