Joseph Lister was born in 1827 in Upton, Essex Which is a small town right out of London. He was born into a Quaker family. His Dad was a wine merchant and an armature physicist. He had 4 other siblings he attended many different Quaker schools. In 1844 Joseph Lister attended London University, which was against Quaker belief because you had to take a vow before the king of England and the Church of England. He entered University College in London and took fine arts in 1848 before taking medicine. He graduated in 1852. That same year he became a fellow at Royal College of surgeons. He also became house surgeon at the University college Hospital. The next year he had an appointment as an assistant to James Syme the best-known surgeon at the time. After these 3 years after this appointment he was appointed surgeon at Edinburg royal infantry. (Which was the same infantry that James Syme was ahead of.) This is where he met his wife James Syme’s daughter. They got married 7 months later they joined the Scottish episcope church.
