Salvation by Faith and Not By Works

In the sixteenth century a revolt arose within the Catholic Church. A man by the name of Martin Luther protested against the Catholic view an obtaining salvation. The Catholics sought salvation by leading a blameless life or by performing holy acts. Another critical view which also led towards the reformation was the “unholy motives of the church officials.” Catholic priests would allow people to pay off their iniquities. And as good as this may sound it also put a financial burden on those who were less fortunate. The Pope and other officials were living a life of luxury while the people were paying for their indulgences. The Protestant Reformation was an attempt to correct and purify the Christian religion. Luther put it very simply “Justification by faith alone.” His thought as well as the Protestant thought was that our salvation could only be achieved by our faith in Jesus Christ.

Many churches outside the Protestant circle would say that faith must go hand-in-hand with hope and love. This means that the Christian must live the so called “Christian Life”; to do the best you can till the end and hope that when your time comes all your good works would some how out weigh the bad. But than the question to ask is, how do you know how much is enough to make God well pleased with you? The answer, you alone will never be able to live up to Gods standards, according to the Protestant Church. This is why they say time and time again that only our faith alone can save us from damnation. “Because when our time comes God will be looking at Jesus Christ’s paper, his good works, his perfect life, and his devotion, not ours. It is his blood that has already paid for our sins. And it is our faith in the spilling of that blood that will save us.” (“Sometimes just you gotta preach to get your
