Branches of NBC

The Branches and Alliances of NBC Network

NBC has been a major player in network television since the beginning. It started as a radio broadcasting company and now, as one of the “Big 3,” it has strongly affected the content and coverage available to the public for many years. Recently, NBC’s influence over and increase in content has become even greater through its two new networks—MSNBC and CNBC—and several Internet alliances. Through integration and the digital platform, these new developments are methods of growth that could be forewarning of a monopoly in the television industry. Now that NBC has alliances with companies such as Microsoft and several other Internet access companies, it has moved into other forms of media and its influence is spreading to a wider audience with a broader demographic profile. All of these things contribute to what makes NBC a network worth reviewing and investigating.

It was very difficult to find scholarly resources about this topic since most of what I am looking at happened within the past 12 or so years. Therefore, all of my sources are obtained from credible online information. The first site that I looked at was NBC.com. Obviously, there is onl

Thus, as NBC grows stronger, domestically and abroad in places like Europe and Asia, it continuously gains more and more control over what we see, think, and hear. Its stronghold over the business world and its coverage of news and entertainment give it a hand in almost every function of media discussed in class. Through digital platform, the network is able to continue its control in various forms and adapt to the ever changing technology. NBC has made it into almost every from of media, starting with radio, and it still forges on today.

y so much that could be gained from this site because of the fact that there will not be anything negative or critical about NBC or its affiliates. It is a fairly one-sided resource. However, I was able to gain some information about the network and its different aspects. First of all, there were links to MSNBC, CNBC, Access Hollywood, Telemundo—a Spanish network that is affiliated with NBC—NBC Olympics, and PSNBC. PSNBC is a artistic showcase that takes place in a theater owned by NBC in Soho. There is also a link to a page called “Corporate Info” that gives a history of the network and talks about all of its ventures and alliances. Located on this page is the “Diversity Statement” of NBC and its networks.

There are several other alliances that NBC had formed in order to broaden its control and compete with other media giants such as Time Warner. They have a piece of Access Hollywood, Snap, and Expedia, along with an alliance between NBC, Dow Jones, and Microsoft to form CNBC Dow Jones Business Video Services. This service has recently combined with thePlatform to power its online needs. NBC also took on the Olympics with NBC Olympics, which still has a link on the NBC homepage, although it merely goes to the NBC Sports page (NBC).

Starting from the beginning of television, NBC played an important role. Being one of the “Big 3,” NBC has had major control over a lot of the content seen by the American public. Never more so than now, however, as NBC branches out into several different forms of media in a variety of formats.

MSNBC offers a different type of news online. Rather than all business all the time, MSNBC offers weather, technology, sports, health, and shopping, in addition to business news. The joint venture with Microsoft took place in 1995 and was meant to boost the sales of PC’s using an advanced form of interactive news online. According to Jane Hall, that is the main “long-term economic prospect” for Microsoft (PBS, Jane Hall, 1995). Microsoft invested $400 million dollars in this venture in return for the content that NBC has to offer. Ms. Hall and Ms. Warner look at the pro
