Future of Muslim and Christian
The Diplomat in Residence Program held a five day long International Conference about the “Future of Muslim-Christian Relations.” I attended the second conference which was on Tuesday, the third one which was on Wednesday, and the fourth one which was on Thursday. The Tuesday lectures were focused on “State of Muslim-Christian Relations in the Philippines and Indonesia.” The speakers were Dr. Vivienne Angeles, Ambassador Enrique Manalo, and Fr. Eliseo Mercado. The Wednesday lecture was not along the lines of Muslim-Christian Relations, but a unique opportunity to listen to the Ven. Palden Gyatso. The Thursday lectures were about “Challenges to EU Immigration and Integration after 9/11.” The speaker was Dr. Ralf Horlemann. Dr. Angeles began the lectures on “State of Muslim-Christian R
elations in Philippine and Indonesia.” She mentioned that there is presently about 3.8 million Muslims in the Philippines and Indonesia, but the majority of the people there are Catholics. She also stated that Muslims and Christians have always identified themselves with religion, even when Americans began to occupy the Philippines. The last lecture I attended had to be the hardest to follow, just because I felt like Dr. Ralf Horlemann was, to be brutally honest, boring. The topic was “Challenges to EU Immigration and Integration after 9/11.” I definitely learned things that I had no knowledge of before, such as that Europe is still very status quo oriented.
