Brief Report: Screening Tool

Autism is a disorder that impairs about 4 out of 10,000 children worldwide. Interestingly, it affects males 5 times more than females. Autism severely hampers the ability of the individual to communicate with other people and obtain a firm grasp on reality. This disorder was first observed and described by an American psychiatrist named Leo Kanner. Autism is commonly referred to as spectrum disorder because many of the characteristics and symptoms of autism occur at random times and with different levels of severity. Autism can usually be seen in children by the age of 3. Some of the common characteristics of autism are isolated play due to an inability to make friends, engaging in activities that are repetitive such as flipping a switch on and off or staring at an image or object that is rotating, and problems with language and speech. Many experiments have been proposed in regard to detecting autism in infants, and some of these same experiments are showing promise to help diagnose and treat autism. (http://encarta.msn.com)

“Brief Report: Screening Tool for Autism in Two-Year-Olds (STAT): Development and Preliminary Data,” is a comprehensive study conducted to assess the presence of autism in early life. In t

The Childhood Autism Rating Scale, a score used to determine if a child has autism, showed that 18 of the 19 children previously diagnosed with autism had a score on the CARS within the range designated on the scale as being autistic.

previous tests for practice in addition to being evaluated on how well they performed in the experiment.

The actual screening tool, or STAT, consisted of 12 items that are given within a “play-like” environment that usually takes about 20 minutes to finish. All of these items were examples of measures of play, communication, and imitation, all of which were previously described by earlier experiments. The items that were chosen for this experiment displayed a vast difference between the children with the nonautistic developmental disorders and the children diagnosed with autism. Also, the experiment calls for a relatively unimportant group of items called request items. The sole purpose of these items it to promote interaction and a healthy environment for these children. Within the 12 items, 4 were imitation items, 4 were directing attention items, 2 were play items, and 2 request items. The request items do not factor into the score because the purpose of these items was to promote interaction. The score is based on a pass or fail concept.

The developmental sample was composed of 40 children. 7 of these children were diagnosed with autism before the experiment, and 33 of the children were all previously diagnosed with nonautistic developmental disorders (9 had a language impairment, 15 had a specific developmental delay, and 9 had various other developmental disorders). Of the 40 children in the development sample, 22 were boys while 18 were girls. This first sample was used to define a mathematical algorithm for the STAT. The validation sample was composed of 33 children in all. 12 children
