The 1950’s VS. Today

Many older Americans thought for a long time that Ozzie and Harriet, The Cleavers, and The Cunningham’s were the norm, not an abnormality. These Americans yearn for the patriotism, values, morals, and a sense of security that developed in the 1950’s. Many Americans growing up during the 1950’s believe that this time was much more advantageous than growing up today. I believe that growing up today is better than growing up during the 1950’s. I believe that patriotism, values, morals, and a sense of security are prevalent today just like they were back then. Today is a great time to be alive. Sure, today’s society is extremely different than the one of yesteryear but it still has managed to hold on to what is important. With that said, I would have to say that today’s society is more beneficial for those to grow up in and live. Family is still an important role, opportunities are better for everyone, and technology has given us more than ever.

Well, my mom doesn’t wear pearls everyday to vacuum and she doesn’t know how to cook. My dad doesn’t put in hours upon hours at the office working for the boss only to come home and put his feet up on his favorite recliner while the rest of us ask him about his day. and

Family is important because families push one another and create more opportunities for everyone. My sister is playing division 2 softball in college, is 25 years old and still in college, and I have the opportunity to go to a college on a full scholarship for academics and become a doctor. I am sure that if we were growing up during the 1950’s, we would not have these opportunities. would not be playing softball because back then, people thought girls were too delicate. would probably be married with four kids by now and instead of getting a degree in teaching; she’d be working on a degree in homemaking. The thought of me being a doctor would not have even went through someone’s head back then either. Some people thought that college wasn’t even for girls. Now, there are professional women’s sports leagues, women working men’s jobs, and more. It’s not just women who have new opportunities; it’s men too. Men are able to stay home with the kids and become a “stay-at-home dad.” My dad stays home with us. He doesn’t do this by choice though. He hurt his arm really bad about five years ago and was left unable to work. He cleans, cooks, and takes care of the kids while my mom is at work. He helps out in anyway he can so that when my mom comes home from a tiring day at work, she doesn’t have to do much of anything. He makes sure that dinner is ready on the table for her the minute she gets home. The technology of today helps him make dinner fast and lets him know when to make it.
