Das Experiment

The film is full of sociological concepts. From the beginning, the guards were given weapons in the form of batons. Weapons are usually a sign of power especially over unarmed opponents. Prisoners were stripped naked a few times during the movie. At the start of the experiment, the prisoners were told to shower naked in view of everyone. This along with using numbers instead of names and dressing them in smocks were the start of the dehumanizing process. Like Berus said, humiliation did work in getting the prisoners under control. This level of power was addictive to Berus, who was probably teased in the real world. The other guards just latched onto him for his leadership.
In the beginning the prisoners seemed to be having a good time and joking with the guards. The guards took their roles seriously almost from the beginning. At some point even the prisoners forgot that it was an experiment and gave in to the guards" demands. Both sides participated in role-taking and role-making. The prisoners and guards acted in accordance with whatever uniform they had on. They also changed their behavior in response to the other side. Guards got a lot stricter when the prisoners did not do what they said. Prisoners reacted by conforming and trying to be good prisoners out of fear.
These roles challenged the self as well. The prisoners stopped believing they were taxi drivers or electricians and fell into their role as prisoners. The only one not affected at all was the air force pilot. Some of the others suffered from panic attacks or depression while trying to cope with this new role. They were told they were prisoners and treated like prisoners, so they believed it. The guards forgot their real identities also.
Even the professor and his assistants were fascinated by how well everyone fell into their roles. It does not take much to change how people act. A change of clothes and a set of rules and you have a whole new personality.
