Chapter 1; three generations; Joseph Hooper: "Moving, 3 generations"; old man: 1 grandson; grandson: Edmund Hooper; Joseph had no woman; Lot of valuable things in Red Room; Edmund wants to go to it, but he isn't allowed by Joseph; Mother of Edmund had been Ellen Hooper, who died 6 years ago; House: Warings; lot of years ago: Derne was a village of which joseph owned some land, now people had left for the towns; now Joseph only owned Warings, the house; he used to be a banker, ambitious; Ellen Hooper was the younger daughter of a minor baronet; Warings: ugly, built of dark red brick; Joseph did not like Warings when he was a student; Joseph: 51 years old; Edmund had the room which was high up at the back of the house; Mrs Boland: "Warrings is like a dark museum; Derne (village): low lying; Edmund found the key of the Red Room; Red Room: designed by first Joseph Hooper as a library --> glass cases; Bound volumes of Banker's Journal and sets of Victorian noverlists; grandfather had been alepidopterist and kept some moths and butterflies in the Red Room; Edmund entered the Red Room; Grandfather of Edmund was known and respected the world over; Edmund had been brought a lot of times to the Red Room; Joseph knew he had failed as a fathe
r; Edmund was in the Red Room, at night (moon); Joseph Hooper wanted to sell the moths; largest moth: Acheroptia atropos --> Death's Head Hawk Moth; after touching it, it collapsed; Chapter 2; Mrs Helena Kingshaw came, she was widowed, 37, should be the informal housekeeper; Mrs Boland for the cleaning and some cooking; she had a boy: Charles Kingshaw, 11 years (like Edmund); Edmund didn't miss his mother; Charles had red hair, they arrived; Mrs Helena Kingshaw wore a jade green suit; Edmund locked himself in his bedroom; Edmund had dropped a lump of platicine, on which he had written: "I didn't want you to come here"; Charles stuffed the message in his trouser pocket; Edmund said Charles got the bed in shich grandfather had died (not true!); Edmund and Charles talked about the London flat; father of Charles was in the Battle of Britain, once; Picture (photograph) of his father; they shortly fighted!; Charles always had to live in somebody else's place; Edmund looked the older, but he was shorter; when Charles was alone, he started crying without making any sound; Edmund locked himself up in his own room; Joseph entered Edmund's room; Edmund was not yet 11 years old; the Kingshaws would stay at least the whole summer; Joseph said to Edmund that his behaviour was very uncivil; Joseph wanted to avoid his father's mistakes, but he had replaced them with so many of his own; only his wife had known the right way of living; Edmund went to Charles; Mrs Helena: "You're both going on a tour of the estate!"; Edmund run along all the rooms, Charles only followed him in the beginning; Charles sat on the stairs and he was afraid Edmund would pull him over, but he didn't; Edmund walked away, Charles went sitting; Chapter 3; East of warings: Derne (village), west: Hang Wood; Charles began to walk; they had been at Warings over a week; Charles wanted to get away from the house and Edmund; he saw a very large crow; the big crow flew over him right over his head; after he went out of the cornfield to the grass, the crow kept coming; He fell and there was blood; when he saw the Warings-house he fell again, and the crow landed in the middle of his back; Charles began to scream --> crow rose and Charles ran on again; he was scared, and he saw Edmund looking at him from a window; Edmund teased Charles, because he had been afraid of a crow; Edmund dared him to go to the copse or the big wood; Charles remebered when he was 5 and went to an open-air swimming pool, there Turville saw he was afraid of water, but he had to jump in; Turville urged him to jump in several times; now he had to do the same with the copse or wood; Edmund went away; charles wanted to go to a school; Edmund thought of things to do TO Charles; Edmund thought of the several attics (Dutch: zolders); Charles woke and thought why Edmund has disappeared; Charles thought Edmund was "learning" to be a bully; Charles saw something was on his bed, but it was night (moonlight); it was a dead crow, which Edmund had found in the attic; Charles was silent and did not cry; after half-sleeping untill 6 o'clock, he rolled over and went to the toilet; when Charles was back in his room, the crow had gone, because Edmund had brought it back to the attic; at breakfast, Charles got the submarine of the cornflakes, Edmund said he could have it; Joseph Hooper said to Helena Kingshaw he thought Edmund and Charles were friends!; Edmund wanted to show Charles the Red Room; when they had entered, Charles saw the moths; Charles was terrified of moths; Charles remembered them when they used to fly in his bedroom; Charles didn't dare to open one of the cases, so Edmund did; Charles went on backwards; Edmund locked the door and went away, so Charles was lonely and locked up in the Red Room; he began to cry; he didn't shout, because then Edmund should win; Charles Kingshaw turned the light on, so Joseph and Helena saw him when they walked through the hall; Edmund said next morning: "He is stupid, why didn't he
