XFL

American football has surpassed baseball in recent years as “America’s past time.” It has become part of everyday life, with the NFL surpassing three billion dollars in revenue per year, more than one billion more than its closest competitor. It is thought of as gritty, physical, and all around fun just as most Americans like to be thought of. For decades the NFL has dominated the world of football, but despite all of this, it has come under attack in recent years because of the increasing mediocrity, cost to attend games, skyrocketing player and coaches salaries, squabbling owners, and lack of loyalty by players to their respective teams. With this, Vince McMahon, the founder of the WWF, saw an opportunity and took charge to introduce a new and controversial professional football league called the XFL.

In looking at Porter’s Five Forces, we conclude that the barriers to entry are high with the startup costs of the endeavor for the first year being roughly $100 million dollars. Next, in looking at the threat of substitutes, we can conclude that it is moderate because of the many different types of entertainment available, be it other activities or sports. There are also other football leagues available to the

However, after the first week, the ratings began to tumble in a sharp decline. The expectations for the games were mixed, and everyone felt a little disappointed. The football fan felt there was too little football, and too much entertainment. The fan more interested in the entertainment on the other hand felt there was too much football and too little entertainment. Despite the fact that management tried to make changes to improve the product week in and week out, the bottom line was that level of competition was just too poor, and the target market was misinterpreted. On one side, the XFL tried to appeal to families because of its low price. That however was a complete failure as the changes in the style of play and atmosphere did not appeal to a family environment at all. The league however also made a tremendous mistake in its choice of a time slot, since their major target market was young males. In trying to attract a young male audience, the Saturday night time slot was a terrible mistake since on average, the young male consumer will not be home on a Saturday night.

The league needed to start up strong and because of its quick development and implementation; it was not as organized and well thought out as people thought. The main problem was with the talent of the players. Consumers, for the most part, just cannot watch non-competitive football, and what was advertised them, wasn’t delivered. The hits were just as hard in the NFL if not harder as the players were faster and stronger. Another problem within the start of the season was the lack of a training camp. These players did not have enough time of practice together, and it affected their play the first few weeks. In the NFL, none of the fans complain about the poor quality of play the first few weeks, but the first four weeks of the XFL season dashed their hopes of becoming a successful league.

The main strategy in implementing this new league and making it a success was not only bringing back “smash-mouth football”, one that in the eyes of many had been missing, but a very aggressive marketing campaign which ironically can be called by some “smash-mouth marketing”. Every week there seemed to be a new announcement, as the team at XFL, partly because
