Binge drinking, as discussed in my personal experience essay, can lead to psychological dependence and addiction. It can also make a negative impact on academics and social life. My outlook with respect to this issue has dramatically changed over the past year from frequently getting drunk at parties to drinking in moderation. I have a lot of exposure to the types of situations I discussed in my essay. I feel that there has to be a reason behind why it keeps happening on campuses, and would like to learn more from an expert’s point of view. One issue I was seeking information on was finding out more about what drives college students to binge drink. I wanted to know if this problem is recent or if it is just now being looked upon with concern. I also sought information on correlation of the way Americans drink and American culture.

I chose to interview Mr. Marty Green M.S.W., a staff social worker at Purdue Univerity Counseling and Psychological Services. I had him as a teacher in one of my classes and was very impressed with his knowledge on alcohol and substance abuse. Mr. Green got his degree in Clinical Social Work from Indiana University-Indianapolis. He started dealing with substance abuse by working with thi

rteen to twenty year-olds from inner city, crime-ridden areas. For twelve years, he worked with subjects that ranged from homeless people to gang members. Generally, the problems he ran across, whether it was domestic violence, sexual assault or anything related, were tied to alcohol or chemical abuse. He also has experience working with patients that have chemical dependencies in a hospital setting.

I was pleasantly surprised when I came out of the interview having learned more than I could have imagined. Mr. Green is experienced, educated, and knowledgeable on this subject. He had informative, useful responses to every question I asked him. He also helped me with the subject of my argumentation paper. As you will see, there is a lot more to binge drinking than what is obvious.

My first question was in regard to whether binge drinking among college students was getting worse, or if it has always been a problem and is just now being made a real issue. He informed me that the percentage of binge drinkers in college has been fairly consistent over the last decade. The numbers are currently staying consistent or slightly rising. He told me that 43-44% of all college students binge drink, according to a Harvard study. The “formal” definition of binge drinking is five or more drinks for males and four or more drinks for females in one sitting or night of partying. The study does not specify weight or age of the subjects or the time span of the sitting. The vagueness of the definition leaves room for people to put their own twist on what binge drinking is. I also learned that the heaviest drinking typically occurs between the ages of seventeen and twenty-two. Due to the tendency of experimentation during this part of life, episodes of extreme binge drinking and intoxication are usually not intentional. The course of a drinker’s night is not predictable. The original plans did not include getting drunk to the point of passing out or not being able to walk.
