Students right to Ebonics

Dialect is the most important part of the diversity of this country. Since the beginning of the United States, people from all around the world have settled here bringing their languages. As time went on, many types of English were formed. The definition of dialect as found in the online Merriam-Webster dictionary is; “A regional variety of language distinguished by features of vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation from other regional varieties and constituting together with them a single language” (M-W). To sum it up, its many different languages wrapped up into one.

The United States is the most diverse country in the world, so in that there are guaranteed to be at least two different ways of speaking English. The North has a different way of saying something than the South, but the meaning is the same. The most commonly talked about dialect is that of African Americans.

Black language, better known as Ebonics, has been the topic of debate between language experts across the country. For years people believed that black talk was just jibberish made up as the conversation went on. But recently Ebonics has been classified as a language. Because it’s now a language, a new question arises; should it be taught

7: characterized by hostility or angry discontent : SULLEN” (M-W)” “Clearly if the meaning of “Black English” is based on the definitions of “black” rather than “Black” English is; “Negroid” English. It is “Soiled” English. It is “Evil” English. It is “Sinister” English. It is “Cheerless and Depressing” English. It is “Dirty” English. It is “Wicked” English. In essence, “Black English: has no positive connotations whatsoever” (Smith, Crozier pg 4). Based on this passage how can we possibly give students the right to their own language when their language is so bad?

On the flipside, “experts” Ernie Smith and Karen Crozier say “Ebonics is not English. Presuming, inherently, by the very use of the word “English” that the language of slave descendants of African origin is a variant of “English”, the inference is also made that, being a dialect of English, there is a genetic kinship between “Black English” and Germanic language family to which English belongs. The fact is, from a historical linguistic perspective, in terms of “base” form which the grammatical features of Black English derives, nothing could be further from the truth” (Smith, Crozier pg 1). This suggests that Ebonics is not even a language. Different dialects of the same language resemble the same grammatical structure, even though words are replaced. In Webster’s online dictionary the word black is defined as: “1a: of the color black; 1b: very dark in color; 1c: of or relating to a group or race characterized by dark pigmentation; NEGROID; 2: having dark skin, hair, and eyes : SWARTHY; 3: DIRTY, SOILED; 4a: thor
