Fahrenheit 451

Bradbury’s protagonist in the novel, Fahrenheit 451, is Guy Montag, a thirty-year-old, fireman, who is ironically named after a prominent paper-manufacturing company.

Montag is, in many ways, is an “antihero” like Darth Vader of Star Wars, but in a more subtle way, he starts off as being a mindless servant of an oppressive government who have giving everything to control the minds of all society.

During the early scenes of the novel, Montag enjoys and loves his book-burning career; [“Kerosene is nothing but perfume to me”, PG 6], expelling punishment in a patriotic and just way. Beneath his everyday schedule, however, Montag is completely apathetic towards his job, Mildred, and the society, which he lives; he seems to have feeling for nobody or anything, simply performing his required tasks in a slave-like fashion.

Montag is married to a completely lifeless woman by the name of Mildred, who is the exact replica of what society has become. Mildred ignores intellectual thought for technology like her three wall interactive television and seashell earphones, which allow her to have a constant escape from any free thought or “dis

This quote implies to the reader that Montag will become a man of wisdom, preaching the word of literature and the beauty, which it speaks. Montag will help re-build a society where the only slaves and drones are the televisions and the technology. With the help of the others, all aspects of what humans should be involved in will be fulfilled.

Montag arrives home after this incident to find two women and Millie in his house, watching television like drones. Montag shows his newly acquired thinking by, unplugging the TV. Asking the ladies to talk about something of stature, and finally pulls out a book and reads the women a passage entitled, “Dover Beach”. The women uncontrollably cry and become outraged, for what they hear and see is too much for their simple, dehumanized minds to interpret. Montags reaction to Mrs. Bowles outrage shows that he is actually thinking and believes in literature because he is defending it and disgracing the woman’s way of life.

One of the most important moments of the book is when a Beetle, a symbol of a dehumanized world, tragically kills Clarisse. Shortly after Clarisse’s death, Montag swipes a book during one of his calls, only to witness the owner burn herself and her home in defiance of the firemen, this event causes a spread of real emotion throughout the firemen causing Montag to question his line of work.
