APENG Summer Assignment

Throughout my summer I had to make certain changes and restrictions to better accomadate the situation I was in. In past summers I didn't have to read so many books, so this assignment was a bit of a shock. Upon recieving the three books, I immediatly set up a schedule so I could be ready by the beginning of the new school year. I set it up to be a book a month, with reading atleast an hour a day, however it didn't turn out that way. Many distractions left me with only one book read at the beginning of August. Although I was able to finish all three of them, it wasn't easy. I actually regret the fact that I had to rush through "Their Eyes Were Wating God". As many may think that summer reading helps stimulate the mind after sitting down on a couch watching television all day or coming home from a boring day of work.

I began my summer with reading "Angela's Ashes: because I thought it was best to get down with the bulkiest book first. I spent most of my time reading in my livingroom at one in the morning. To me that was the best time to read because its so quiet and there are no distractions. WHile reading "Angela's Ashes" a few scence sparked something in my mind and made me actually savor the moment of reading carefully what wa

The next book I read was "Their Eyes Were Watching God". I particuarly enjoyed this book very much, very well written and I loved the slang. Once I started this book, I could hardly put it down, partly because I had to finish it quickly, but mostly because it was so interesting. The whole story deserves a 10+. The first scene I chose was on page 55 when Janie's second partner, Joe Starks prohibited her from wearing her hair down.Once I read this I knew he was going to turn out to be a dominating jealous husband. He prohibited her from doing a lot of things to kind of show off to people that he can control anything he wanted. I did not like that fact at all, especially since she allowed him to step over her like that, because I thought of her as an independant woman. It just shows you how pathetic men can be when they're so insecure about themselves. Which brings me to the next scene on page 79 when Janie finally stood up to Joe when he started to name call infront of everyone at the store. I knew it was bubbling up in her and I got excited when she barked back at him and called out all his flaws. This showed her inner strength. The real Janie. She's the type of person you can't just stick her in a box and expect her to accept it. She finally spread her wings in the story during this scene. The last scene I chose, although very tragic, but moving at the same time was when she shot and killer her third lover, Tea-Cake. Through pages 183 through 188 was very emotional. The man she loved and who she thought loved her backed, honestly tried to kill her. If it wasn't for her thoughtful planning the a couple of nights before it would have been her being buried in Palm Beach instead of her. Even though she didn't want to do it she had to kill him because he was on the verge of betraying her without hesitation. Yet, then again this shows her indepence and that no one has control over her. This is why I admire the book so much. She's a great role model, despite all the terrible feelings she kept in her and the murderous events she took part in. She'd been through it all, and still was able to keep her head up high. I admire that so much.

The final book I read was Hiroshima. I didn't even want to read this book from all that I have heard about it. And when I finally did read it, I disliked it. It was a horrible event, and to think that men would actaully bomb there own race due to conflict. It's devasting to what this world has come to. The book was brutal and obscene, and a
