diary woman ww1

As this is my first journal entry I think it fit to include an introduction about my life and myself. My name is Amelia Evans and I am 16 years old and I come from a family with an English background. I live with my mother whose name is Margaret; father whose name is Nicholas and two brothers: Jeremy aged 18, and Alexander aged 12. Our family is fairly rich for which I am thankful and we can afford to have cooks to make our meals and washerwomen to help with the washing.

We live in a fairly new house. My chores from day to day consist of on washing day getting up to help mother and the washerwoman help wash the clothes, cleaning the dishes, and just keeping the house in order when I see any mess. I also like to sew in my free time. My mother’s day consists of helping the washerwoman, putting out the clothes to dry, cleaning up after breakfast and then for the rest of the day she would be housekeeping with the help of maids and tidying the furniture. More often than not she would sew a little or go and call on some friends. My father is a wealthy businessman and scholar and spends most of his time at work. Most of my day is spent at school where I am still completing my education and so are my brothers though J

The war is now official and Australia is going to be part of it! All the boys at school are going through training to learn how to be soldiers on Wednesday evenings. I can tell that both Alexander and Jeremy enjoy it though Alexander is a bit young. Last night Jeremy told me that he was thinking about going to join the navy and fighting for Britain after he left school next year. Many young men I know are already rushing to sign up and there have been quite a few posters around encouraging people to sign up for the navy. I’m proud to tell my friends that my older brother is going to join the army and I’ve been talking to my best friend Lauren Fitzpatrick and she heard from her father that the war would last less than six months.

Jeremy asked father about going to join the navy as soon as school was over but father, rather to my disappointment and Jeremy’s rage said that Jeremy was too young and would not have permission to go until he was at least 21. He said that though the media said otherwise, boys younger than 21 were not mature enough to go to war and that though he would like Jeremy to go, he would not want him to go just yet. Jeremy threatened to run away. I hope he will not disobey father but secretly I find the thought exciting though I would miss him. You must have parental consent if you want to sign up for the navy and you are under 21. If I try I can see fathers point that Jeremy could get killed but isn’t the risk only small? And isn’t it worth taking that risk for the glory of fighting?

My father says that much of the war propaganda has been taking greater effect and that’s what might have motivated Jeremy to really run away. I think that people, by listening to all these speeches and looking at all these posters and articles in the paper are being ever more reminded that the war is good and should be accepted and that it’s seen as cowardly to refrain from going to the war if you were able. I have mixed feelings about this. My mother follows with what father thinks and father, though he supports Britain and the act of sending troops from Australia to the war I think he is concerned that the media is giving the wrong impression about the war to the public.
