Short story

“Wait a minute,” his captor said. “You’d better shave.” Naked, he went into the bathroom. As he shaved his face, his captor‘s masked head moved into view in the mirror behind him. “Hurry up, now,” it said. After wiping his face, he went back into the bedroom where, watched by his tall captor, he put on his usual work clothes, a white shirt, a tie and his suit. “Tidy up your hair,” the voice behind him said. He combed his hair, watching his captor in the mirror. “Sit down. You and me are going to have a wee talk.” He sat on his wife’s dressing chair while his captor sat on the bed. “You’re going to leave like any other day. You take your normal route to the hotel.” Ah, the hotel so that is what they were after, Ryan thought. “You’ll drive onto the premises and park your car in your reserved parking space. You’ll arrive exactly at 9 am. When you park your car, do not enter the hotel. Do you here me?” Ryan nodded, staring at the masked eyes directly in front of him. “You’ll go straight back out the gate and onto the street again. You will not go into the hotel, no matter what anyone says to you or whatever happens. If you’re not out of the hotel parking lot five minutes a

“If I give a warning, they will kill my wife I do not love anymore. However, if I don’t countless innocent people will die.” Once again, Ryan wiped the sweat off his forehead. “Damn, what am I going to do? I cannot just sacrifice Mary, that would be murder. However, I would save everyone in the Hotel.” Ryan got ready to make a right turn. Looking in the rear-view mirror he once again saw the white Ford following him. ”There is no way I can give a warning without them seeing me give it.”

He got out of the car and walked down the path towards the gate. Once he reached the gate, he went through the guardhouse to save time. The guards were busy checking every car and person entering the premises, because of the speaker due to appear later.

“They are not going to give a warning, they never do. These real IRA people want to blow up stuff and do not care who gets hurt. I cannot believe that this has to happen to me. That means it is up to me to warn the hotel. However if I do they’ll kill Mary.” The car behind him honked it’s horn. Ryan rouse up from his thoughts. He looked in his rear-view mirror as a reflex, but then remembered who was in the car behind him so he looked straight ahead again. Ryan slowly started moving again.

He got up and went down the steps in front of the captor. Downstairs stood two other masked men he had seen earlier. Mary, Ryan’s wife sat on the couch and as soon as she saw him, she jumped up. “Where are you taking him?” she asked in a wound-up voice. “Say goodbye to her now,” the captor from upstairs said. “He’s going to work,” one of the captors beside her said in a smirky voice. “God take good care of you,” she said, as if in a prayer. “I’ll be back soon,” he said. He turned around and headed for the door. At the back door, the tall captor grabbed Ryan’s arm. “There’s no police checks on your route, so you won’t be stopped. Your car’s trunk will be locked, do not try to open it. One last thing.” The grip on Ryan’s arm tightened. “When the police asks you questions about us, we all were wearing masks and you don’t know nothing about any of us. Is that clear?” Ryan nodded. The tall captor handed him his keys and gave him a slight push. “On your way now.”
