Knowledge is leaned externally

In this paper I show that Socrates’ approach to knowledge through recollection is a contradiction. These contradictions are found his conversation with Meno and in his lesson with Meno’s attendant. If Socrates were to follow his reasoning that all knowledge is in each individual’s soul he would not engage in dialogues. Since all knowledge is within one’s self Socrates would spend his time better if he were to question his own soul rather than to seek knowledge from others through questioning. In fact, to pursue his philosophical pursuits most effectively he should not seek knowledge or debate with others, instead he should meditate. In the primary example of recollection, when Socrates questions Meno’s attendant, the situation personifies Socrates’ relationship with Meno. Through questioning Socrates leads the attendant, who does not recall the knowledge, rather Socrates teaches the attendant as though he were a student learning the unknown. The interaction between Socrates and the attendant illustrate the relationship between Socrates and Meno.

Throughout the conversation with Meno’s attendant Socrates tries to show that knowledge is recalled. However, in his demonstration he conveys how knowledge is initially taug

ht, not recalled. Socrates uses suggestive questioning and limiting language such as: “you know that a square figure is like this” (82b) “Do you agree?” (82e) “…is it not?” (83c). In reality the language and persuasion Socrates uses teaches the attendant about the geometry of which attendant had no prior knowledge, even in his soul. It was through Socrates’ lesson that he came to the appropriate reasoning. He gave answers such as: “yes” (85b), “of course” (87c), and “that is so” (88e). While he does not lecture Meno in a classical sense, from a podium, his questions have a similar effect. Hidden under the facade of recollection the attendant acquired the knowledge from Socrates, this is contrary to the theory that knowledge is recalled from the soul. Therefore, in Socrates’ primary example he contradicts his theory of knowledge.

While Socrates was not a master of the social world his philosophical ideas had much to do with society. If he were to not interact with society then he would have trouble providing proper critique. That is, unless, society already exists within him. Social interaction is possibly unnecessary because the experience of all social situ
