Divorce Rates in America

When looking at the high divorce rates in America, it is clear that various structural factors are affecting the relationships of many American families. In most family situations there is not one clear-cut reason that leads to divorce. Rather, divorce is a gradual process that ultimately results in families breaking apart. After looking further into divorce, I thought about what effect divorce might have on the children in these families searched for two articles on the subject of children and divorce and was hoping to find conflicting ideas to make it a bit more interesting.

I located two articles with authors’ who had both contrasting and similar views on the subject. The first article is titled; “Happy Marriage Makes For Happy Kids”. (author not listed) The author of this piece believes that two married biological parents are best for kids (“Happy Marriage”). The author stresses the importance of both biological parents rearing children in a low conflict marriage for future health and happiness (“Happy Marriage”). The second article is titled, “Moving on: Parental Breakups May Not Always Be Bad for Kids”, by Susan Campbell. The author talks about how recent studies show that it is not the parent’s

The last factor that I wanted to mention that might affect the chances of divorce is legal factors. Primarily in divorce, the women generally will get custody of the children. Although there is supposed to be a legal consideration of how much money the father will be able to support for his children, the fact of the matter remains that most fathers do not really pay for any child support. Divorce results in the leading cause of poverty for both women and children. The father, on the other hand, increases his economic opportunity and now has the ability to start his life all over again.

I felt that both of these articles were well written although a bit too broad. I could locate major points and concerns but I wish both authors would have expanded on them. I enjoyed Campbell’s article titled, Moving on: Parental Breakups May Not Always Be Bad for Kids, because it seemed to make more sense to me. I do not believe that divorce is a horrible thing because sometimes things just don’t work out. I agree with Campbell that couples that stay together for the wrong reasons and continue to argue could damage the child further. I will now discuss some issues about divorce using ideas learned through class and research.
