Hamlet

Hamlet was a complicated man. Along with being complicated himself, his life was also complicated. The death of his father and the marriage of his mother to Claudius are just two examples of the many conflicts Hamlet had to deal with. These issues lead Hamlet through hard times that he had to solve and do something about. Hamlet was both a man of thought and a man of action. This made it hard for Hamlet to act on his emotions; it made him procrastinate and think about things too much.

Hamlet’s character indicates that he is a man of thought by how he handles certain situations throughout the play. He reveals himself to be an over-analytical man who frequently procrastinates. Hamlet demonstrates his over-analytical tendencies when Claudius was praying: “Now might I do it pat, now he is praying./ And not I’ll do it. And so he goes to heaven./ And so am I revenged. That would be scanned:..”(III, iii, 76-78). Hamlet did not want Claudius to go to heaven, so he did not kill him at that time. What Hamlet did not know was that Claudius was not sincere in his prayers. Claudius did not mean what he was praying. Hamlet’s father was not expecting his death, so Hamlet wants Claudius to be caught off guard like his fat

Hamlet’s thoughtfulness is not always a bad trait for him in the play. It helps him through hard times, helps him figure out more about what is going on around him, and it gives him some leads on what Claudius was planning. In his conversation with Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, when they arrive unannounced, Hamlet becomes suspicious of the purpose of his old friends' visit and he is perceptive enough to see through their outside motives into their real intentions: “Nay, then, I have an eye of you.--If you love/ me, hold not off.”(II,ii,308-310). After realizing this, he forces them to reveal that they have been sent by the King to find out what is causing his change: “My lord, we were sent for.”(II,ii,309). Hamlet did right by getting them to confess that they were sent for by the king to spy on him. Hamlet was very smart by thinking of what he could say if he did kill Claudius. If he did kill Claudius, he was going to claim an act of insanity, “To put an antic disposition on,”(I,v,190), so he would have a just reason for doing it. Hamlet started acting mad even before he killed Claudius so that when he did he would have a reason for it and it would all makes sense because everybody would know that Hamlet was an insane man even before he killed Claudius. He also figured that if he was thought to be insane he would not be a threat to his uncle so he would not be expecting anything from Hamlet at this time. Hamlet had many battles with himself throughout the play. An example of one of his battles is if he should live and avenge his father’s death or if he should die and get rid of all the pain and troubles: "To be, or not to be, that is the question."(III,i,63). He weighs out the good things about death and the bad things about it:

Hamlet was also a man of action. He shows more of his action side later on in the play. One time is when Hamlet goes with the ghost even though Marcellus and Horatio did not want him to because they thought it would make him go mad. Hamlet was willing to take the chance of going mad to find out information, whether it was good or bad, “It waves me still./ Go on; I'll follow thee.”(I,iv,85-86), Hamlet took action into his own hands and followed the ghost. Hamlet also takes action by putting on the play, The Murder of Gonzago, to get a reaction from Claudius. In the play Hamlet set it up so that the death of the king would be the same as the death of Hamlet Sr: “Follow him, friends. We’ll hear a play to-morrow./ Dost thou hear me, old friend? Can you play The/ Murder of Gonzago?”(II,ii,546-548). During the play Hamlet says what is happening in the scene where the king is being killed, and he uses this to get the guilt of Claudius: “He poisons him in the garden for his estate./ His name's Gonzago. The story is extant, and
