Lyndon B. Johnson stated “ We can draw lessons from the past, but we cannot live in it.” This quote summarizes what I feel about the older generations and their way of thinking. The new generation complains about the old generation living too slow while the old generation complains about the new generation living too quick. Both groups with their different opinions still come together for the love of the family. My hairdresser Mrs. Rosa who I have known for almost three years now, represented my link to the past. From the first moment I met her I saw a humble and kind person. A true picture of how a mother should be. Smell of fresh baked bread constantly remains in her home along with many religious statues. Every Sunday the fireplace stays full with candles representing a saint or a special religious holiday. Even after knowing her for such a long time we had never talked about real issues besides what had changed since the last appointment. I just felt we would have nothing in common or there would be nothing to talk about. On one of my longer appointment I finally decided to ask her about her family and her views about life.

Life goes on. The older generation of today once young probably had dissimilar views with their older generations. Life as we know it did not stop there because of their differences. Mrs. Rosa and I have now become close friend. Our love for our families gives us a common bond. We now spend hours talking about the past and the further. Exchanging ideas in hopes of bridging the gap between our generations.
After listening to all her views, I took a while to think about my own views about life. Were there any similarities between our ideas or did we truly see family in a different light? The view that stood out was that in order to have a united family you need to keep in touch every day. I thought of my family’s busy schedule and how we only talk when we have time. Being students or new career starters, we do not have the luxury of time. When we do find time, we either talk on the phone or e-mail each other, which seems to work enough to have people comment and even envy. Another idea that I could not agree with personally, had to do with dating leading to marriage. If I had married the first guy I dated I would probably be a very miserable person. Each of my relationships taught me something about my self and what to look for in a life partner. Dating dose not necessarily mean sex but I do not think premarital sex signifies the ultimate sin either. Each person should be the judge of his or her own mor
