Secret War in America
Battered women who kill their abusers should not get harsh punishment or the same punishment as other murderers. The statistics are ridiculous on how many women are abused in the United States. Currently there are 2,000 to 4,000 battered women in America serving prison time for defending their lives against their batterers (Talvi inthesetimes.com). The average prison sentence of men who kill their female partners is two to six years and women who kill their male partners are sentenced on average to fifteen years, despite the fact that they did it in self defense (Talvi inthesetimes.com). Ever three minutes a woman is raped, every fifteen seconds a woman is battered and every six hours a woman is battered to death. More women seek medical attention for harm inflicted by a spouse than for injuries caused by auto accidents, rapes, and muggings combined (cyber.law.Harvard.edu). Research indicates that half the women in this country will experience some sort of violence from a husband or a boyfriend, in one form or another every year. 73 percent to 85 percent do not experience physical assault until after they have married the abuser (Browne,47). Battering is also known as wife assault, spousal abuse, women
Battered women who kill in self-defense have likely suffered frequent and severe abuse, are often survivors of brutal sexual assault, and were frequent threatened with death especially if they attempted to leave, and were often caught and beaten when they left an abuser. Women charged in the death of a mate have the least extensive criminal records of any people convicted, but when convicted of these killings they are frequently sentenced to longer prison terms than men. It’s the abusive mate who becomes the final victim. In most cases the police were called to the house several time before a battered women has killed her husband (Browne10-11). Traditionally temporary insanity was the defense used by women who killed abusers. (Domestic violence Statics.com) Battered women who were once threatened by their abuser with a weapon will wind up killing the abuser with the same exact weapon as well (Browne 140). Battered women who kill their abusers have left or attempted to leave an average of five times. Once they do the abusers find them, coerce them with apologies and promises to change, and the cycle of violence starts again (cyber.law.Harvard.edu). abuse, and violence against women in relationships. Battering crosses all classes, race, lifestyles, and religious lines (Nicarthy 13). there is a cycle of violence that batterers use to gain their domination and control (Cyber.law.Harvard.edu). Just about half of relationships in the United Stated experience some sort of violence and it needs to be stopped. Women should not have to deal with the abuse that their husbands or boyfriends put them through. People need to speak out and report the abuse and teach children over and over again that abuse is wrong. Battered women who kill their abusers should not receive a harsh penalty. If these women were that emotionally, psychologically, and psychically abused by their partners and there only way out was to kill should be understandable but in order to get away without punishment the battered woman has to be able to prove the abuse in some form or another.
