Lady Macbeth and the witches

“Lady Macbeth and the witches are largely responsible for Macbeths downfall.” Discuss

In William Shakespeare’s play Macbeth Lady Macbeth and the witches play a very big part in the cause of Macbeths downfall. The witches upon their first appearance in the play, start to talk of Macbeth indicating that they are thinking of doing something bad to Macbeth. The witches then proceed to prophesise to Macbeth, causing Macbeth to do things he otherwise would not have done. Upon arriving at his castle, Lady Macbeth greets him and eventually persuades him to kill the king so that Macbeth can then become king. The kings death arouses suspicion that Macbeth may be at fault in his sons, Malcomn and Donalbain, and they leave the country and gather an army to defeat Macbeth. Lady Macbeth develops a severe mental illness because of the murder of Duncan (the king) and kills herself, this causes Macbeth to no longer see reason to live in his life. The witches give Macbeth a prophecy that says that someone who is born of a woman cannot kill him, this makes him believe that he is invincible, which he is not. The witches also tell him that he will not die tell Birnam wood moves, he does not believe this is possible but he soon learns that it

The wood began to move.” - (Act 5 Sc. 5 ll. 37-38)

Macbeth sees an apparition sent from the witches that claims he cannot be killed of anyone who is born of a woman, “Be bloody, bold, and resolute; laugh to scorn

From the beginning of Shakepeare’s play, Macbeth, it can be thought that the three witches plan to do something unpleasant to Macbeth. They speak of Macbeth in the opening scene of the play. “There to greet with Macbeth.” - (Act 1, Sc. 1, ll. 8). This is before Macbeth’s first appearance in the play. The witches can then be thought to be planning to carry out some form of action towards Macbeth. This action would be most likely mischievous because witches in those days where perceived to be somewhat evil and liked to cause havoc. “Sleep shall neither night nor day
