vietnam war
I’m against any war, and Vietnam War is no exception. War is one the drawbacks of human civilization, that consume enormous resources, both human and material, and lead only to destruction. Vietnam is the longest and most controversial war US fought. Defense Secretary Robert McNamara during the Vietnam era admits in his memoirs that Vietnam War was a mistake. “We of the Kennedy and Johnson administration who participated in the decisions on Vietnam acted according to what we thought were the principles and traditions of this nation. We made our decisions in light of those values. Yet we were wrong, terribly wrong. We owe it to future generations to explain why.” (McNamara “The Tragedy and lessons of Vietnam” Preface) Many argue now that the Vietnam War was a deadly mistake, and it is my opinion as well. History cannot be looked at trough White and Black glasses. There are neither completely wrong nor right decisions, nor does completely “good” or “bad” guys, like in Hollywood movies, ever existed. It is rather consist of different shadow of gray, as it is one of those acts which can be turned into the black from white and back. It is criticized now, but to completely understand decision which led to this w
Vietnam War has been simply right thing to do for many Americans. “We fight because we must fight if we are to live in a world where every country can shape its own destiny. And only in such a world will our own freedom be finally secure....” (Johnson speech at Johns Hopkins University, April 7, 1965) Society felt it needed, and supported in to about 1968, when number of casualties increase and many people asked why America need to fight this war thousand miles from home. 1. Martin Luther King JR. “Declaration of Independence from the War in Vietnam”. (April 4, 1967) American leaders felt that United States should stand as a firm power against any communist advance. “We are in Vietnam because our national security and security of the entire free world demands that firm line be drawn against the further advance of Communist imperialism – in Asia, in Africa, in Latin America, and in Europe.” (Dodd 810) More third world countries fall into the communist hands in 1960’s that ever before. Cuba, Algeria, China, and some African countries already fall into the communist hands, and many others could follow. Pro-communist guerilla movements spread across South America, Africa, and Southeast Asia. Cuba and China aided Congolese rebels. One of the most famous examples would be Che Guevara fighting for communist revolution in Bolivia. Only possible solution for many politics at that time was to fight it, like in Korea or stand firm as in Cuban missile crisis. Loss of a single battle, as it has been much feared in 1950’s and 1960’s, could result in even greater spread of communism around the globe, thus United States cannot afford to abandon even smallest one. “Whether we decide to abandon Southeast Asia or to try to draw another line outside Vietnam, the loss of Vietnam will result in dozen more Vietnams in different parts of the world. If we cannot cope with this type of warfare in Vietnam, the Chinese Communists will be encouraged in the belief that we cannot cope with it anywhere else.” (Dodd 812) United States entered the war to oppose spread of communism in one of the key region of the world North Vietnam has been backed by Soviet Union and China. “The Soviet Union agreed yesterday to give North Vietnam more technical and economic aid....It was the second Soviet-North Vietnamese aid agreement signed here in less than six months. a pact signed July 12 was announced as providing troth military and economic aid....
