“NO Child Left Behind”

Children have a right to be educated without the fear of passing a test.Children today need critical thinking skills perserverance and integrety,these qualities are not


The state has spent over twenty-five million dollars on this project so far.This test was designed to promote failure. The law promises to give parents of underperforming schools vouchers to attend private schools. We have not as yet seen any money put aside for this and ewven if there were the amount of six hundred and fifty dolllars is far cry from what private schools charge for tuition annually. Those of us who see the effects of this test have an obligation to speak up.Teachers plan their classes for the school year to prepare for the MCAS test.The test goes on for two weeks.That means that two weeks of curriculum are sacrificed, not to mention the preparartion time. Students who are absent from class inconvenience teachers who need to scheduele alternative accomodations for make-ups.Let,s also talk about the students who broke down crying for fear they would fail.Students have already declared that they would never pass the tests, so why should they bother trying to learn? They have planned on dropping out instead pf risking defeat.It is cruel and abusive to have special need students take the same exam as everyone else without any special accomadations for their special learning needs. We must not forget the bilingual students, for they also have sopecial needs.Was not the slogan for MCAS,“Leave No Child Behind?”.Because of their importance to student classification and graduation they have become the focus of every classroom in the state.There has been a long history in the U.S. of misusing tests, such as making high-stake decisions based on one score. Most important, I would like to know why we need this test.Did teachers not know which students were sucessful and which were failing before MCAS? Is this the way we should spend twenty-five million dollars? Is this something we really need? We are in a financial crisis and classrooms have more students and less teachers. Many programs have been eliminated or reduced, but our government has money to waste on a test that will bring only negative results ending in the failure of public schools.Children to need integrity, perserverance, critical thinking skills, and creativity , qualities that cannot be measured on a standardized test.

In 1994The improving America’s Schools Act, initiated a system for measuring and testing Title One students(poor and disadvantaged kids), the new act goes further,it is meant to close the gap and assure that all children from all backgrounds are measured against the same standards. Each state is required by law tio show adequate yearly progress and that all students are proficient in twelve years. years.Two aspects most talked about concern accountability and annual testing requirements.Student performances are separated by socioeconomic and demographic catagories including students with disabilities and English languege learners, is expected to improve until all groups reach100 percent proficient( Michelau,Shreve).
