Slavery
Prejudice against homosexuals and other group minorities have been a topic of great controversy over the years. In the novel Those Other People by Alice Childress discrimination against African American and homosexuals is the main topic. This novel manages to portray how hard it was for the Tate family to grow up in an all white neighborhood. The novel also talks about the hardships that Jonathan Barnett had to go through for being a homosexual. These hardships were brought upon them because of their sexual preferences and skin color. The novel starts off by narrating Jonathans Barnett’s relationship with his roommate Harper Mead. Harper Mead was Jonathan’s roommate when he lived in New York City. He was also the main character responsible for sending Jonathan back to his hometown Mini Town. This is where the whole development of the story takes place. One day Mead got really drunk, so he decided to call Jonathan’s parents to tell them about their son’s sexual preference. He did this by calling Mr. Barnett and saying, “Jonathan Barnett is gay, a fruit. Jon-baby’s limp in the wrist. In your terms, a homosexual.” (Childress, 12) Mead did this because he was very tired of being denied by Jonat
han, as his lover. Jonathan’s parents were so shocked when they found out, that their 17-year-old son had male sexual preference. This is why they decided to bring Jonathan back to Mini Town. Jonathan left Mead because he shouldn’t have told his parents that he was gay. When he got back to Mini Town he found a job as a computer teacher in Mini Town High. On the way to his new job he met a very outgoing girl named Theodora Lynn. At this point they managed to form a very strong-friendly bond between them. This happened because she was the first person he met at his new job. Theodora plays a great role in this story because the main plot revolves on her supposedly getting raped by her gym teacher, Mr. Hardy. At the beginning the only people that believed in Theodora were Jonathan and Tyrone, a student at the school. Everyone else in the entire town thought she was lying about the rape. The people believed she was lying because of rumors that her uncle Ed had previously molested her, so they thought she brought it upon herself. Mr. Hardy had also been previously accused of molesting a minor in a summer camp. This was not believed by the townspeople because most thought Mr. Hardy was a perfect civilian. The only person that knew his dirty secret was Mrs. Mitchell. She was the school principal. Mrs. Mitchell knew about the accusation, yet she did not say a word to anyone
