Great Expectations

The differences in the characters portray their time period very well in both texts. In the 1800's the upper class didn't usually have to work hard for their money, however, today nothing comes for free; we have to work to be wealthy. The different settings in the two texts shows the effect that time has had on our views of where the rich should live and where the poor should live. The difference in time also effects how the upper class interacts with the lower class. These are some ways the change in time have affected the story.

In the novel, when Pip was told by Jaggers that he would make him a gentleman, Pip responded with a great deal of enthusiasm. However, in the film when Ragno informs Finn that an unknown person is setting him up in New York with a studio, Finn doesn't believe him "So Finn, I"m empowered by my client to make your dreams come true- "(Laughs)". The reason that Finn is suspicious and Pip is excited is because of the difference in time. .
The different settings in the two texts shows the effect that time has had on our views of where the rich should live and where the poor should live. When the novel Great Expectations was written, a setting of Pips home town being near the mores would have been ideal, and the belief that a gentlemen should live in London was also a perfect setting. However, in today's society, a more believable setting for a family living in poverty would be a small fishing town, i.e. a town in Miami, where crime, unemployment and drugs are a plenty " They banned the big fishing rigs in the gulf that year, and we were poor. We scraped by on what Joe could earn on charters and lawn work". In today's society, it is more believable that the rich live in New York, one of the largest and richest cities in the world, not to mention the center of the art world.
