The Reformation’s of Peter The Great Peter the Great, was perhaps one of Russia’s most brilliant leaders. Peter was a man who dreamed of a better Russia, stronger international trade that would strengthen the foundation of the Russia’s economy. Although a Russian patriot, and most defiantly a team player Peter admired and respected the western European countries such as the English and the Dutch, for their commerce and military technology. By reforming to a European way of life, Russia would be viewed as like a European county and Russia would become a sovereign nation itself. Of course it could be argued to be truly sovereign, a country or territory should have its own identity, one thing that the new Russia did not have at all. Peter’s first major plans of building an awesome military power were to increase recruitments. Volunteers and conscripts were called up to serve new regiments of the military. Those who signed up for the military without force were paid surprisingly well, 11 roubles a year, and were given allowance for food, equal to that of the military personnel in some of the higher ranked regiments. Landowners had to provide 1 footsoilder for every fifty-peasant households and a cavalryman for every hundred-peasant households. If they served in the civil administration, or retired from all government related fields, they had to provide infantrymen for each 30 households they owned. Monasteries, and church servants had to provide 1 for every 25 households they possessed. All together some 32, 000 to 33, 000 men were enlisted in the military in only a few months.
