fashion and drag queens

The date is October 4, 2003. The time is 7:30 pm. One is standing outside a restaurant on 1st Avenue called Lucky Cheng’s. Chinese lettering and a bulletin board with newspaper clippings hint at what is going on inside the restaurant. Fashionably dressed people are running inside. The anticipation grows. Once inside, the senses go on overload. Many different smells, colors, and noises are in the atmosphere. Welcome to Lucky Cheng’s.

A noticeable color scheme is red. The waitresses are beautiful. They are wearing mini skirts, bikini tops, and sequenced dresses, plat formed shoes, and stilettos. Their hair and makeup is immaculate. One begins to wonder how long it takes these drag queens to get ready. One also wonders how do they feel and what are they trying to portray? “How do these “women” identify themselves? What do they think their clothing choices mean? Do they feel powerful?

Ideology is the ideas and beliefs that differentiate one group from another. At Lucky Cheng’s, the differences were visible. Yes, both audience members and waitresses were loud; but differences were seen in the dress and behaviors. Some of the patrons wore clothing that was just as revealing as those of the drag queens. Some of the audience members were afraid to partake in the activities. Some were quiet and reserved. The drag queens, as mentioned earlier, were very sexual in their actions. It may be said that many of them were shocking. Fashion likes shock, because shock helps sell clothing.

Fashion has a few communicative functions. One of them being individualistic expression. The other being definition of social role. Many people want to be part of a group but also want to show their individuality. This was seen among the performers at Lucky Cheng’s. They were all wearing female clothing, but each put her own twist to it. For example, one was walking around in a bikini and fur boots. Another was wearing shorts, where one was side all pink ruffles and the other was denim. No two performers were the same outfit or the same makeup. Some were more neutral colors while others wore bright blues, pinks, and glitter.

One used to think of fashion as clothing. It is something you wear. There are times when fashion helps identify who you are and what
