Women In Mexican-American cult

At first, when I started reading this book, it seemed boring and not very interesting. First, it wasn’t interesting to me because I thought that I already knew all about the history of the United States and Mexico. I didn’t even suspect that women played such an important part in shaping Mexican-American culture.

As I was reading, I subconsciously began understanding that the history of Mexican women in the United States was rich in culture and diversity. Women played an important role throughout the twentieth century. I also discovered that the history of Mexican women was relatively unknown, buried in history, at least until this book, “From Out Of The Shadows” by Vicki L. Ruiz was published. I discovered from my class lectures that “From Out of the Shadows” is the first book that was ever written in which the author provides a full study of Mexican women living in the United States. I was ready for the new exciting reading challenge. Spanning several generations of women, Ruiz brought those voices of women out naturally. After reading this book I understand that there is probably no one better equipped for the task of writing the first twentieth ce

In the introduction of this book, she states that, "When I was a child, I learned two types of history-the one at home and the one at school. My mother and grandmother would entertain me with tales of their Colorado girlhoods, stories of village life, coalmines, strikes, discrimination and family lore. At school, scattered references were made to Coronado, Ponce De Leon, the Alamo and Pancho Villa.” That was the extent of Latino history. Not knowing the full picture. Ruiz decided to become a historian. And the book, Ruiz explains, is an effort at reclaiming this unwritten history, the stories of Mexican women that "have remained in the shadows."

While reading, it I noticed that occasionally Ruiz’s thoughts become entangled. Where she would not finish her first thought yet she would start her second thought and then kind of mix the two together. I would have separated the thoughts a little bit further from each other just to keep it simpler and less confusing.

ntury Chicana history than Vicki Ruiz, whose path-breaking research into settlement homes, mid-twentieth century labor unions, and comparative employment statistics enabled her to bring those women to life as she retold their history. Ruiz looked at the important roles Mexican women have played in American history as comrades, farm workers, flappers, labor activists, barrio volunteers, civic leaders and feminists.

And in several places, Ruiz used needless jargon, which can slow people down and disrupts readers’ concentration. In most cases, jargon in this book shows up in the form of specialized language that is incoherent to me and to a lot of other people I spoke to in my class.

As little has been published yet about Mexican-American women in twe
